Posted on 25 March, 2022

Hospital furniture must provide comfort to patients, be it ICU or patient ward. The hospital bed is the first and foremost equipment patients need when they are hospitalized. Many patients often cannot move from bed. They have their meal on the bed, too. Hence, the bed is an essential piece of hospital furniture that needs to be comfortable enough for patients.

We have various kinds of beds for different purposes. For instance, fully electric beds for ICU patients; fowler beds for general wards, and special rooms; semi-fowler beds for general wards and semi-special rooms, and so on.

Are you looking to purchase beds for your general ward? If yes, this blog is for you.

Understand the fowler and semi-fowler beds and see which one fits your requirements.

Fowler Bed – Tatva

fowlerbed

Tatva is a Sanskrit word that means ‘thatness’. The Tatva bed is designed for excellent durability.

Fowler bed or Tatva Bed is a two-functional hospital bed designed for daily requirements. It has two functions – backrest and knee rest. These can be either operated manually or electrically; it depends on the model you choose. These beds are required for general wards and special rooms.

Semi-fowler – Satva

Satva is again a Sanskrit word that means ‘purity’. The word Satva is inspired by the virtues of Shreemad Bhagavad Geeta.

Semi fowler bed or Satva is one function bed that is designed for long-lasting usage. The one function that it has is the backrest; which is most used in general wards and semi-special rooms. It can be operated manually or electrically; it again depends on the model you select. This bed requires minimal maintenance.

Fowler and semi-fowler beds have more or less the same specifications and accessories. However, there are some reasons for which they are defined as distinct beds. Let’s find out.

Here is the comparison of specifications of the fowler and semi-fowler bed:

Bed Type Fowler Semi-fowler
Dimensions of the bed 2050mm L X 1025mm W X 610mm H 2050mm L X 1025mm W X 610mm H

Backrest 0 to 70° 0 to 70°
Kneerest 0 to 45° NA

As the table showcases, there is a difference of thin line in the specifications of the fowler and semi fowler bed. The only distinct detail is the knee rest; the semi-fowler bed does not have a knee rest function.

Here are the accessories for both the beds:

  • 125mm twin wheel castors– Patients are often required to shift to different rooms. Wheel castors are required at that time.
  • Urine bag hook- Some patients cannot even move to go to a restroom. Hence, the hook is already given for a urine bag.
  • CT- Scan & chart holder- Doctors visit many patients in one go. If patients’ charts are already in the room, check-ups become fast and easy.
  • Sanitizer bottle holder- Doctors or other staff members may require sanitizer before or after visiting patients’ rooms.
  • Side rail- This is required for reducing the risk of slipping, rolling, sliding from the bed in patients’ sleep.

In the final words, hospital beds have different functionalities for giving comfort to patients with different conditions. Fowler and semi-fowler beds are designed to fulfil the requirements of general wards, special rooms, and semi-special rooms.
